The Computer Commons
The Computer Commons, located in room 234 on the second floor of the Library and Academic Resource Center (LARC building), is an open-access computer lab designed to support Valley College students’ academic needs. With a wide variety of software (Final Draft 13, Photoshop, etc.), internet access, printing, scanning, copy services, two group study rooms, and a dedicated support staff at the Help Desk, the Computer Commons is a one-stop resource for many student needs.
- Equipment - The lab has 98 computers with Windows 10 and two iMac stations, BW and color printing options, and a high-resolution scanner. With a student ID card, LAVC students can borrow wired headphones and earbuds, flash drives, and whiteboard markers for the study rooms.
- Printing - The price for printing is 10¢ for B/W and 25¢ for Color per page. Students can print from the computers in the lab or through the internet using our dedicated ePRINTit Website.
- Files will be printable from the kiosks in our lab and the library for 24 hours after being sent to the queue. Bills, coins, credit, debit, ApplePay, and Android Pay are all accepted forms of payment. Please note if using a bank card, credit card, Apple Pay, or Android Pay there will be a Pre-Authorization hold of $10.00 made by your financial institution. Holds are typically released in 1-3 business days.
- Associated Student Union members can print up to 30 pages for free at the Student Union. Please contact the ASU for more information: Call 818-778-5517, or visit the ASU on the second floor of the Student Union Building.
- Policy - To use the Computer Commons, students must be enrolled at LAVC for the current semester and have an LACCD student email address. Food and drink are not allowed in the lab. Children are not permitted entry to the Computer Commons lab, but the LAVC Family Resource Center does allow children with their LAVC student-parents at their Kid-Friendly Study Lounge, where they have four Mac computers with a printer. Check their website for details.
- Assistance - Dedicated Computer Commons Help Desk staff are available to assist students with the use of computers, printing, scanning, and academic software. The Help Desk staff are not allowed to tutor students, assist with personal, non-college-related business, or handle students' personal devices or belongings.
- Employment - If you're interested in joining our staff as a student worker, a volunteer or through the Federal Work Study program, you can contact Rob or Sean by calling 818-778-5725, emailing cclab@a220149.com, or stopping by the lab. You can also use this application submission form.

The Math tutoring is a “walking-in” in-person and virtual tutoring service (no appointment need) for students to get help with your math homework/assignments. Three qualified tutors are available at any given hour to work with students on a one-on-one basis for short periods as needed. Our math tutors can conduct the study sessions, advising on how to study for math courses, and provide tips on their own pathway to succeed in multiple math courses at our in-person and virtual math tutoring service.
Math Tutoring Lab offers:
- Free Virtual tutoring from all qualified tutors and math professors who completed many math courses up to differential equations
- Study skills and useful math worksheets
- Weekly Study sessions
- Embedded Tutoring
The LAVC Math tutoring is also providing embedded tutoring for high demand/low success subjects to increase student success. The role of embedded tutors is to foster a cohort-based, peer-to-peer learning community. Embedded tutors contribute to student success through their presence and participation in class and outside of class at their drop-in tutoring sessions/workshops.
The Multi-Subject Tutoring offers online and in-person tutoring for Accounting, Computer Science, Computer Applications Office Technology (CAOT), Chemistry, Music, Physics, Statistics 101, and more.
At the Multi-Subject Tutoring, you can access tutoring in a variety of subjects and check-out laptop computers for in-house use when working with a tutor. LAVC students are also welcome to use the Center to do independent study, read and relax between classes, or make use of the whiteboards for homework problems.
With comfy couches, study tables, and access to whiteboards/markers, the ARC Study Lounge is YOUR dedicated place to study or connect with study groups/friends. Located in 226, 2nd floor of the Library. You can also book a study room for individual and group study.
The LAVC Writing Tutoring Lab offers online and in-person writing tutoring for classes across the curriculum. Students can receive assistance on essays, MLA Format, APA Format, reports, summaries, scholarship essays, college application prompts, and more. Students must be enrolled in the class for the current semester/session for the assignment being tutored.
In addition to the ARC's in-person and online tutoring services, LAVC students also have access to online tutoring through NetTutor, a great option for extended hours of operation or subjects not covered by ARC. As a third-party company, NetTutor provides trained tutors to cover a wide variety of subjects with extended hours of operation for some subjects. In fact, math, English, and statistics tutoring is offered 24/7.
- NetTutor should be accessible in your Canvas course menu under "NetTutor." If it's not visible, the ARC's NetTutor Canvas site is the one place to connect to NetTutor. This site also provides instructions, a list of subjects, and tutoring hours. When you visit the ARC's NetTutor site, you'll see "Enroll in LAVC NetTutor," but this just connects you to NetTutor—you're not enrolling in a course.
- For an overview of how to use NetTutor, check out the short video.
